The Scream: Rohinton Mistry

Posted by Indiglow.tv on Friday February 27, 2009

Rohinton Mistry is arguably Canada’s most beloved and popular writer. His fiction has won prestigious prizes in Canada and around the world. The Oprah’s Book Club selection of his novel A Fine Balance increased Mistry’s already large audience in North America, and in Canada alone to more than a quarter of a million readers. He is working on a new novel, as yet unscheduled, but this delicious little book will be savoured by Mistry’s hungry and devoted fans. The Scream is a single story by Rohinton Mistry, to date his shortest book! And what a gem it is.
Set in a Bombay apartment, The Scream is narrated by a man at the end of his life, who is angry at the predicament of old age, at his isolation from his family and from a world that no longer understands him. He rails and raves in ways that are both hilarious and moving, and which touch us with recognition.

Printed originally in a limited edition of 150 copies that was sold exclusively by World Literacy of Canada as a fundraiser for their organization, The Scream was exquisitely produced and featured original artwork by the celebrated Canadian artist Tony Urquhart. This is the first trade edition of this treasure, which will retain beautiful production values as well as all of Tony Urquhart’s colourful, dynamic artwork, which was inspired by the story.

MUMBAI, Oct 14 (Reuters) - India’s jeera futures ended slightly higher in the futures market on Tuesday on moderate physical buying for festivals, analysts and a trader said.

Indian festivals in the last week of October has fuelled demand from domestic traders, though export buying was low owing to the global financial crisis, analysts said.

In the physical market, 2,500 bags arrived, nearly the same as the previous day, while about 7,000 to 8,000 bags were traded, lower than the previous day, said Arvindbhai Patel, a trader in Unjha.

Spot prices ruled at 11,600 rupees per 100 kg, the same as the previous day.

India’s loss is Singapore’s gain

Posted by Indiglow.tv on Tuesday October 14, 2008

From Business Standard:

In November 2007 — a month after the market regulator restricted the use of participatory notes (P-notes) — the share of the Singapore Nifty (SGX Nifty) as a percentage of the total Nifty futures open interest (OI) was 8 per cent, according to a study done by Edelweiss Securities.

Less than a year later, the share has surged to nearly 40 per cent of the total outstanding Nifty OI. OI refers to derivative contracts that have not been squared off, leading Finance Minister P Chidambaram to comment last week that the need is to “encourage more inflows and not to export our markets to Singapore.”

India’s stock index rises 1.5 pct

Posted by Indiglow.tv on Tuesday October 14, 2008

from IHT:

India’s benchmark stock index rose 1.54 percent Tuesday, as optimism that government bailout plans in the U.S. and Europe will heal the global financial system lifted markets across the region.

After rallying more than 4 percent in the morning, the benchmark Sensex shed early gains to close up 174.31 points, or 1.54 percent, at 11,483.

Information technology companies, which have been hard hit in recent weeks as investors fretted about their large exposure to U.S. financial services firms, led the rise.

Infosys Technologies Ltd. rose 5.87 percent, while Satyam Computer Services Ltd. ended up 7.38 percent.

ICICI Bank Ltd., the nation’s largest private bank, which has also been battered in recent weeks, rose 5.18 percent.

India repo to ease funds’ liquidity pressure - trade

Posted by Indiglow.tv on Tuesday October 14, 2008

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Indian mutual funds are seeing “ample” redemptions but the Reserve Bank of India’s decision to release 200 billion rupees ($4.2 billion) to banks exclusively to lend to funds, would ease liquidity for them, the trade body chief said on Tuesday.

“There is an ample amount of redemption,” A.P. Kurian, chairman of the Association of Mutual Funds in India, told Reuters by telephone from India.

The RBI said on Tuesday it would conduct a special 14-day repo auction, at which it infuses liquidity into the banking system, to enable banks to meet the liquidity requirements of mutual funds.

India defers polls in troubled Kashmir region

Posted by Indiglow.tv on Tuesday October 14, 2008

NEW DELHI (AFP) — India’s election commission on Tuesday deferred state polls in the Kashmir region, which has been hit by a resurgence of protests against New Delhi’s rule in recent months.

Election Commission chief N. Gopalswami told reporters that “considering all issues, no decision has been taken” on holding state elections in the disputed region.

Indian Kashmir was put under federal rule in July following the collapse of the state government over a land row that triggered a revival of anti-India demonstrations.

The protests forced pro-New Delhi parties to suspend their activities in the Muslim-majority Kashmir valley but many political groups have voiced opposition to any postponement of polls and an extension of federal rule.

New Delhi has been battling a Muslim insurgency in Kashmir since 1989.

State elections have to be held in Kashmir before January 10, when federal rule reaches the six-month mark. But on Tuesday Gopalswami did not say whether this deadline could be met.

India Bonds Slump on Speculation Central Bank to Cut Debt Ratio

Posted by Indiglow.tv on Tuesday October 14, 2008

from Bloomberg:

India’s 10-year government bonds declined the most in almost three weeks on speculation policy makers will cut the amount of debt banks are required to hold to free up cash.

Benchmark yields climbed from near a five-month low as a reduction in the so-called statutory liquidity ratio will damp demand for the securities. India’s banking rules require lenders to invest 25 percent of their deposits in debt. A 1 percentage- point cut may potentially free up 350 billion rupees ($7.3 billion), said S. Srikumar, chief debt trader at state-owned Corporation Bank.
